Fiona Quinn

Photographer Fiona Quinn has recreated the fairytales of Rapunzel and Sleeping Beauty in these images. I love the delicate nature of the images with the neutral colour scheme employed.

Chris Craymer

I love these images by photographer Chris Craymer, I love the use of colour and light and the way the photos have a slight mist in the background, adding a slightly ethereal feel to the images.

Vogue does Little Red Riding Hood

These photos of Natalia Vodianova for the September issue of Vogue show a retelling of the classic tale with high fashion clothing. I love the colours of the clothing against the autumnal colours of the woods.

Eugenio Receunco

These photos are part of a series done by photographer Eugenio Receunco based on classic fairytales. I love the way he has taken the stories and put a modern, different twist on them, with a slightly high fashion, aristocratic element.

Sleeping Beauty

A new modern take on Sleeping Beauty is being released this year and is currently showing at the Cannes Film Festival. It shows the main character Lucy (Sleeping Beauty), as a high class prostitute who is driven to remote country houses, sedated and then given over to the men who can do (almost) what they want to her.
Lucy is completely passive and submissive, deciding who she should go home with at the toss of a coin. It is a really interesting take on the classic tale.

Disney Inspired Art & Photography

Disney is famous for bringing fairy tales to life, they have also inspired a number of artists and photographers with their take on story telling.

Here are a few examples:

I believe the next 4 images to be very interesting as the artist has taken the innocent characters of each fairytale and drawn them all in the same original situations but has made them extremely sexual. This way of approaching Disney is a strong contrast to the originals as the characters were made to been as sweet, innocent and child friendly... everything these new interpretations are not!

Modern Day Interpretations

Over the past couple of years, the trend of brands and companies taking inspiration from fairytales and famous stories has risen.

The most recent adaptation is the films 'Red Riding Hood' and 'Beastly'. They both take the basic storyline of the famous films 'The Little Red Riding Hood' and 'Beauty and The Beast' and have modernised them. To see the different approach to the storylines is interesting as they have made the films extremely new and exciting whilst keeping the old well known aspects which have made them so famous.

Possible Layouts for our Zine...

Having researched into the famous layouts and patterns that can be seen in the old, original fairytale books, I think that it would be relevant to the topic we are writing about to incorporate some of these old designs and make them modern so it keeps with the theme.

GHD Fairy Tales

The world famous hair straightening brand GHD used fairy tales as the inspiration behind one of their advertising campaigns a few years ago. They took the original fairy tales and put a modern twist on it, empowering the female characters in the original stories. The adverts were available both in print and on television, you can view the adverts here and here.
